10 Hidden Gems in Morocco That Tourists Haven’t Discovered Yet

If you’re a backpacker who loves adventure and unforgettable new experiences, a nature and peace lover, a couple seeking a romantic and tranquil getaway, or simply a solo traveler, this blog is for you.

Here I want to share with you the places that left the biggest mark on me and allowed me to connect with nature’s beauty, far from the noise of big cities and long tourist queues. Just peace, the best views, and good food.


1. Akchour Waterfalls, Chefchaouen’s hidden paradise

This hidden spot is just 45 minutes from Chefchaouen, a northern Moroccan oasis with incredible views, surrounded by nature and water. If you’re into hiking, you’ll absolutely love this place.

How to get to Akchour Waterfalls:

The easiest way to get there from Chefchaouen is by taxi.

The hike to the waterfalls takes about 3 hours, depending on how many stops you make. I recommend going with a local guide who knows the trail well.


2. Sidi Kaouki Beach, 30 minutes from Essaouira

Sidi Kaouki Beach

A small beach town just 25 km from Essaouira.

A perfect beach to relax, soak up the sun and sea breeze, ideal for surf lovers. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, you can surf here and enjoy the waves.

Don’t miss the chance to take a camel ride on the beach and witness an unforgettable sunset.

How to get there:

You can drive or take a public bus, it’s about a 30-minute trip.

Where to stay:

If you’re planning to stay for several days and surf, I recommend:

La Maison des Vagues: Bohemian and elegant style, just 400 meters from the beach.


3. Tafraout: The Painted Rocks

The Painted Rocks

Just a few kilometers from Tafraout, you’ll find an art installation created by a Belgian artist in the 1980s. It’s a special place with rocks of various sizes painted in vibrant colors.

How to get there:

It’s about a 4-hour drive from Agadir.

4. Ouzoud Waterfalls

If you’re in Marrakech, don’t miss a day trip to this stunning place.

The massive Ouzoud waterfall is surrounded by nature and restaurants offering delicious local food.

Go early to enjoy the day and wear light, comfortable clothes: there are many stairs to reach the waterfall.

5. Bhalil: The Cave House

Near Fez lies this small village where many people still live in stone caves.

If you’re looking for a unique experience, I highly recommend it.

It felt like stepping into a historic fairytale: peaceful and quiet. Sleeping in a cave for the first time was unforgettable.

6. Ait Bouguemez: The Happy Valley

Ait Bouguemez (The Happy Valley)

Another hidden gem to escape to in search of nature, peace, and a simple, traditional lifestyle.

It’s the perfect place for nature and adventure lovers. Here you can go climbing and sleep in tents under the stars.

7. Imilchil: A Celebration of Love

Imilchil

Every September, this mountain town hosts a traditional marriage festival where many couples get married.

It’s a great chance to experience Moroccan traditions and culture.

The atmosphere is filled with music, and you can also buy traditional souvenirs.

I recommend staying in a local auberge (guesthouse) to enjoy the region’s warm hospitality.

8. Asilah

Hidden Gems in Morocco Asilah

Just 45 minutes from Tangier, this city features rich Spanish and Portuguese architecture.

It’s a calm, colorful city with a quiet beach.

My favorite part was walking through the old city streets and being charmed by the architecture and vibrant colors.

9. Tamegroute: Pottery Village

Tamegroute

In the Moroccan Sahara, this small village of around 6,000 people is a must-visit for pottery lovers.

You can find unique, affordable pieces here.

For book and history lovers, this village is also known for its libraries filled with knowledge and ancient texts.

10. Imlil: Perfect Stay Before Toubkal

Imlil

A small village full of peace, fresh air, and magical mountain views.

Most people here (apart from locals) are preparing for the Toubkal hike, the highest mountain in North Africa.

Spending a few nights in Imlil was the best way to prepare for the hike, enjoying the tranquility and stunning views.

I recommend this place if you want the best sunrise and daytime views.

Was it worth it?

Absolutely.

For me, it was a chance to connect with my true self, surrounded by simple, nonjudgmental people — who don’t care about brands, makeup, or likes on social media.

It was the best trip of my life, I discovered a new version of myself that I fell in love with.

If you’re someone who values luxury and appearances, sorry! this probably isn’t the trip for you. But if you enjoy the beauty of a simple life, you’ll thrive here.
